Ingredients
Caramel Base:
Β½ cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 tbsp corn syrup (or maple syrup for a twist)
Bread Layer:
1 loaf of French bread, brioche, or challah (about 1 lb), sliced 1-inch thick
5 large eggs
1Β½ cups half-and-half (or use ΒΎ cup milk + ΒΎ cup heavy cream)
1 tbsp vanilla extract
ΒΌ tsp salt
Optional: Β½ tsp cinnamon or splash of orange liqueur

1. Make the Caramel Base
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter with brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir until smooth and bubbling (2β3 minutes).
Pour immediately into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
2. Layer the Bread
Place the slices of bread over the caramel, overlapping slightly.
You may need to trim some slices to fit tightly in a single layer.
