A savory and salty dish featuring zucchini, onions, and ham is a delightful combination that balances the sweetness of the vegetables with the rich, umami flavor of the ham. Here’s a simple recipe for a Salty Zucchini, Onion, and Ham Skillet that you can try:
Ingredients:
2 medium zucchinis, sliced into half-moons or rounds
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
200g (7 oz) ham, cut into cubes or strips (you can use deli ham or leftover cooked ham)
2 tbsp olive oil or butter
1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
1 tsp dried thyme or oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
Red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for garnish)
Fresh parsley or basil (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
Prepare the ingredients: Slice the zucchini and onion, and cut the ham into small pieces. Mince the garlic if you're using it.
Cook the onions and garlic: In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the olive oil (or butter) over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally until they begin to soften. Add the garlic, if using, and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add the zucchini: Stir in the sliced zucchini and cook for 5-7 minutes, until it starts to soften and slightly caramelize. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Add the ham: Once the zucchini is tender, add the cubed or sliced ham to the pan. Stir everything together and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until the ham is heated through and slightly browned.
