Here’s how you can use your trusty cast iron skillet to make unforgettable biscuits!
Cast Iron Biscuits Recipe
Flaky, Buttered Goodness Straight From the Skillet!
Ingredients
For the Biscuits
2 cups all-purpose flour (or self-rising flour for convenience)
1 tablespoon baking powder (omit if using self-rising flour)
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
½ cup buttermilk (or milk with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice for tanginess)
1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for slight sweetness)
For the Skillet
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat Your Skillet
Place your cast iron skillet in the oven and preheat it to 425°F (220°C). This step ensures the skillet is hot when the biscuits go in, creating a crispy bottom crust.
Step 2: Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using).
Add the cold cubed butter and work it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually stir in the buttermilk, mixing just until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix—lumps are okay!
Step 3: Shape the Biscuits
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a rectangle about ¾-inch thick.
Cut the biscuits using a round biscuit cutter or a drinking glass. For softer sides, simply scoop the dough with a spoon or ice cream scoop.
