1 beaten egg
3/4 cup Italian breadcrumbs
2 slices crumbled white bread
1 tablespoon milk
8 ounces shredded mozzarella, reserve 3/4 cup for garnish
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1 cup marinara sauce, plus 1/2 to 3/4 cup more for garnish
Instructions:
How to Make It
Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Increase to high heat and sauté the onion and bell pepper for 3–4 minutes, then remove from heat. Add the meat, onion, pepper, and all other ingredients to a large bowl, reserving 3/4 cup of mozzarella cheese for garnish. Now, with the best tool God gave you: your hands, dive in and really mix it all together. Once everything is blended, arrange the mixture and shape it into a baking dish of your choice. For ours, I used my oval Portuguese earthenware. Pour 1/2 to 3/4 cup of marinara sauce over the top and spread it evenly. Bake in the oven at 400°F for 50 minutes. Remove from the oven, top with the remaining cheese, and sprinkle with some dried basil. Return to the oven for another 10 minutes. Check that the meat is not pink before serving. The baking time will depend on the thickness of your bread. Mine was about 1/2 inch thick.
