Roll the hot dogs: If you want to add cheese, place a little shredded mozzarella on one end of each strip of dough. Place a hot dog on top of the cheese (if using) and wrap the strip of dough tightly around the hot dog, overlapping the edges slightly to seal.
Brush with egg wash: Place the rolled hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the entire surface of the dough with the beaten egg. This will help the dough brown and crisp.
Sprinkle (optional): If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds over the egg wash.
Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown, puffed, and crisp. The hot dogs are already cooked, so the main goal is to brown the dough. Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with your favorite sauces on the side for dipping.
Tips and Variations to Make This Even More Addictive:
Cheese inside: In addition to placing the cheese underneath the sausage, you can also slice the sausage lengthwise (without separating the halves) and place the cheese inside before wrapping it in the dough.
Caramelized onions: Sauté sliced onions over low heat until caramelized and place a little on top of the sausage before rolling.
Crispy bacon: Wrap the sausages in thin slices of bacon before wrapping them in the puff pastry. The bacon will crisp up along with the dough.
Fresh herbs: Add chopped herbs (such as parsley, oregano or thyme) to the egg-brushed dough before baking.
Hot sauce: Serve with a homemade or store-bought hot sauce for an extra kick.
Miniatures: For parties, cut the dough and sausages into smaller pieces to make mini hot dogs. Try these variations and find your favorite combination! I’m sure these puff pastry hot dogs will become one of your favorite snacks! 😉
