1. Make the custard:
In a saucepan, whisk cornstarch, sugar, and egg yolks (if using) with 1/2 cup of the milk until smooth.
Add the rest of the milk and place over medium heat.
Stir continuously until it thickens (about 5β7 minutes).
Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and butter. Let cool slightly.
2. Assemble the cake:
Dip cookies quickly in milk (donβt soak), and layer them at the bottom of a square or rectangular dish.
Spread a layer of warm custard over the cookies.
Repeat the layers (cookies β custard) until all is used, finishing with custard on top.
3. Chill:
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to set.
4. Top & Serve:
Add crushed cookies, whipped cream, or drizzle with chocolate before serving.
π‘ Variations:
Add sliced bananas or strawberries between layers.
Use chocolate custard or alternate with pudding layers.
Make individual portions in cups or jars for fun servings.
