π¨βπ³ Preparation:
1. Add the wine Heat:
Pour the wine into a large saucepan and place it over low heat. Heat the wine slowly β be careful not to boil, as boiling can cause the alcohol to evaporate and alter the flavor.
2. Add the herbs and fruit:
Add the spiced nuts, cinnamon stick, and orange peel (and lemon peel, if using) to the pan.
Add the dried figs or prunes, star anise, and grated nutmeg.
Stir the ingredients into the wine to allow the flavors to blend well.
3. Sweeten the mulled wine:
Add sugar to taste. Start with two tablespoons and then taste to see if you want to sweeten the mulled wine. Add additional sugar if desired.
4. Let the mulled wine steep:
Let the mulled wine simmer over low heat for about 20β30 minutes. Stir occasionally, but make sure the mulled wine doesn't boil. This allows the flavors to fully infuse the wine.
If you like it a little spicier, you can add a little rum to taste.
5. Taste and adjust seasoning:
Taste the mulled wine and add more sugar or spices if desired. If the mulled wine is too strong, you can add a little water to mellow the flavor.
6. Serve the mulled wine:
Strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and fruit, and serve immediately in glasses or cups. Make sure the mulled wine is hot, but not boiling.
π½ Serve and enjoy:
Serve the mulled wine with an orange slice or a cinnamon stick as a garnish. It's the perfect drink for the holidays, a winter drink, or a cozy evening with friends or family.
β¨ Variations and Tips:
Spices: For extra depth, add other spices like ginger, cardamom, or a dash of vanilla extract.
Wine: For the best flavor, choose a full-bodied, dry red wine. Avoid sweet wines, as you're already adding sugar.
Vegan Version: Mulled wine is naturally vegan unless you add honey.
Non-alcoholic Version: Use non-alcoholic red wine for a kid-friendly version or if you don't want to drink alcohol. For a fresh twist, you can also substitute some fruit juice for the wine.
With this traditional (yet easy!) mulled wine recipe, you can enjoy the warm and spicy flavors of mulled wine all season long without spending hours in the kitchen! ππ·
