Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Blanch the asparagus in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then drain and set aside.
In a large bowl, mix together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, and black pepper.
Add the blanched asparagus to the soup mixture and stir until well coated.
Pour the asparagus mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Sprinkle the French fried onions evenly over the top.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the onions are golden brown.
Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
