Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt and set aside.
Bring the mixture to a boil in a large bowl. 10-inch cast iron skillet Butter, vegetable oil, cocoa powder and water to a boil.
Remove from heat and mix in dry ingredients thoroughly. Stir in buttermilk, egg and vanilla. Bake cake in pan at 350°F for about 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
While cake begins to cool, prepare frosting. Bring butter, cocoa and milk to a boil in saucepan. Remove from heat and add powdered sugar, walnuts and vanilla. Stir to combine.
Pour over warm cake, smooth with spatula and serve with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and whipped cream.
