Baked cabbage with meatballs

Make the meatballs: In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, parsley, salt, pepper, and paprika (if using) until well combined. Shape into medium-sized meatballs.

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove from the pan and set aside.

In the same skillet, add a little more oil if necessary, then sauté the onions and garlic until soft and lightly browned.

Add the chopped tomatoes, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for a few minutes, then add the broth. Simmer for a few more minutes.

Arrange the blanched cabbage wedges in a baking dish. Arrange the meatballs on top of and around the cabbage.

Pour the tomato sauce over the cabbage and meatballs.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the cabbage is tender and the meatballs are cooked through.
