These carrot buns are soft, tender, and packed with sweet and savory flavors. Perfect for a comforting breakfast, a light snack, or as a delicious side to soups and stews, they combine the natural sweetness of carrots with the fluffiness of freshly baked bread. Here's a recipe to make them from scratch:
Ingredients:
For the Buns:
2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
1 cup finely grated carrots (about 2 medium-sized carrots)
1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
1/3 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 egg (room temperature)
2 tablespoons honey (optional for added sweetness)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional for a hint of spice)
For the Egg Wash:
1 egg, beaten (for brushing on the buns before baking)
For Serving (Optional):
Butter, cream cheese, or jam
Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. If the yeast doesn’t bubble, it may be expired, and you’ll need to start with fresh yeast.
2. Prepare the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and cinnamon (if using).
Make a well in the center and add the grated carrots, softened butter, egg, honey, vanilla extract (if using), and the activated yeast mixture.
Mix with a wooden spoon or your hands until a rough dough forms. Once the ingredients are combined, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
3. Knead the Dough:
Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky. Add small amounts of flour as needed, but try not to over-flour the dough, as you want the buns to remain soft.
Once the dough is kneaded, form it into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
4. First Rise:
