Dumplings are a versatile and satisfying dish enjoyed across various cultures. With their tender dough filled with a savory mixture of meats, vegetables, or cheeses, dumplings offer a comforting meal or snack. The following recipe provides a delightful combination of flavors and textures, making it the perfect addition to any meal.
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
1/2 cup warm water (or more as needed)
1 cup cooked, shredded chicken or pork
1/2 cup finely chopped cabbage or spinach
1/4 cup grated ginger
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon garlic, minced
Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (optional for garnish)
Directions:
Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Add the chilled butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes, or until smooth. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest while you prepare the filling.
Make the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the shredded meat, chopped cabbage or spinach, grated ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, and minced garlic. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
Shape the Dumplings: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out into a thin sheet, about 1/8 inch thick. Using a round cutter or a glass, cut out small circles of dough (around 3 inches in diameter). Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges to seal, creating a half-moon shape or pleating the edges for a more decorative look.
Cook the Dumplings: There are three methods to cook your dumplings:
Steaming: Place the dumplings in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper. Steam over boiling water for about 10-12 minutes or until the dough is cooked through.
Boiling: Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Drop the dumplings in batches and cook for 6-8 minutes or until they float to the top and are cooked through.
Pan-frying: Heat a tablespoon of oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the dumplings and cook until golden brown on the bottom. Then, add a little water to the pan and cover, allowing the dumplings to steam for about 5 minutes until cooked through.
Serve: Once cooked, serve the dumplings hot with dipping sauce or enjoy them as a side dish. Garnish with chopped cilantro if desired.
