Make the Dough:
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until the mixture is bubbly and frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until the dough begins to form.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
Prepare the Beef Filling:
While the dough is rising, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until softened.
Stir in the pizza sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and set aside.
Assemble the Pie:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Punch down the dough and divide it into two portions—one for the bottom and one for the top.
Roll out the larger portion of dough into a circle large enough to fit into a 9-inch pie pan or deep-dish pizza pan.
Place the dough into the pan, pressing it into the bottom and up the sides.
Spread the beef mixture evenly over the crust. Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese, and add optional toppings like pepperoni or vegetables.
Roll out the second portion of dough and place it over the top of the pie. Seal the edges by pinching them together and then cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
Bake the Pie:
Brush the top of the pie with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.
Serve:
Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired, and serve hot.
This Beef Pizza Pie is a hearty, cheesy dish that combines the flavors of pizza with the comfort of a savory pie. Enjoy!
