Directions
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let it stand for about 5 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture, warm milk, sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, and salt. Add eggs and mix well.
Gradually add flour, about 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter to cut out donuts and donut holes.
Cover the cut donuts and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy skillet to 350°F. Fry donuts a few at a time until golden brown, about 1 minute per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to form a smooth glaze.
Dip warm donuts into the glaze and set on a wire rack. Sprinkle with your choice of colorful sprinkles while the glaze is still wet.
Variations & Tips
For a twist, you can add a bit of citrus zest to the glaze for a refreshing flavor. If you like chocolate, swap out the glaze for a chocolate glaze made by melting chocolate chips with a bit of cream. For those with picky eaters, offer a DIY topping station with options like chopped nuts, desiccated coconut, or mini chocolate chips so everyone can customize their own donuts. For a slightly healthier version, try baking the donuts in the oven at 375°F for about 8-10 minutes instead of frying.
