1/2 teaspoon black pepper
4 slices of cheese (optional, but cheddar works great)
4 hamburger buns
Lettuce, tomato, pickles, and your favorite condiments for serving
Directions
1. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and form them into loose balls (do not pack them too tightly).
2. Season each ball with salt and black pepper.
3. Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until very hot, about 2-3 minutes.
4. Place a ball of beef on the skillet and smash it down using a heavy spatula. Press firmly to get it as thin as possible. Repeat with remaining beef balls.
5. Let the patties cook for about 2 minutes until the edges are crispy and the juices start to bubble up.
6. Flip the patties, placing a tablespoon of butter on top of each one as it cooks. Let them cook for another minute or until they are cooked through.
7. If using cheese, place a slice on each patty about 30 seconds before taking off the heat.
8. Toast the hamburger buns on the skillet until they are golden brown.
9. Assemble the burgers by placing the patties on the buns and adding lettuce, tomato, pickles, and your favorite condiments.
Variations & Tips
If you're in the mood for something different, try using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef. For an extra flavor boost, mix some finely chopped onions into the beef before forming the patties. Love spice? Sprinkle a bit of cayenne pepper or chipotle powder on the burgers. And if you're feeling fancy, serve with caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms for a gourmet twist!
