Tasting this is like being with my grandma 40 years ago, she always made them just like this.

1. In a large bowl, combine the self-raising flour and a pinch of salt.
2. Add the cold, chopped butter to the flour mixture, and using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.
3. Make a well in the center of the mixture and add the milk and vanilla extract. Stir until just combined, forming a soft dough.
4. Roll the dough into small balls, about the size of a ping-pong ball, and set them aside.
5. In a separate bowl, mix together the boiling water, golden syrup, and brown sugar until the sugar has dissolved.
6. Carefully pour the syrup mixture into the slow cooker.
7. Gently place the dough balls into the syrup mixture in the slow cooker.
8. Cover and cook on high for 2 to 2.5 hours or until the dumplings are puffed up and cooked through.
9. Serve warm with your favorite accompaniments like vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Variations & Tips
For a citrusy twist, add some finely grated zest of one orange or lemon to the dough mixture. If you have picky eaters who prefer a less sweet alternative, you can use honey in place of golden syrup and reduce the brown sugar. For a slightly spiced version, add a teaspoon of ground cinnamon or nutmeg to the syrup mixture. You can also experiment with different extracts like almond or maple for a unique flavor profile.
