Preheat the oven to 180°C (top/bottom heat).
Halve the baguette lengthways and then cut in half crosswise to make four pieces.
Filling:
Brush the insides of the baguette with olive oil.
Optional: Spread the chopped garlic evenly over the oil.
Place a layer of ham, mozzarella and tomato slices on the bottom halves of the baguette.
Top with fresh basil leaves and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Bake:
Place the top halves of the baguettes on the filled bottom halves.
Place the filled baguettes on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, until the mozzarella has melted and the baguette is golden brown.
Serve:
Remove the baguettes from the oven and let them cool briefly.
Cut into smaller pieces and serve immediately.
