1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and onion, and sauté until fragrant and the onion becomes translucent.
2. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through.
3. Stir in the soy sauce, fish sauce, oyster sauce, and brown sugar. Mix well to ensure the beef is evenly coated with the sauces.
4. Add the red bell pepper and cook for another 2-3 minutes until it starts to soften.
5. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the fresh Thai basil leaves. Let the residual heat wilt the basil.
6. To serve, spoon a generous amount of the beef mixture into the center of each lettuce leaf. Squeeze a bit of fresh lime juice over the top before rolling up the lettuce leaves into bite-sized wraps.
Variations & Tips
For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with textured vegetable protein (TVP) or crumbled tofu. If you enjoy a bit of heat, add some sliced Thai chilies or a dash of Sriracha to the beef mixture. You can also use ground chicken or turkey as a leaner alternative to beef. If Thai basil is hard to find, regular basil or even cilantro can work as a substitute.
