1 loaf of French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
8 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Powdered sugar for dusting
Maple syrup for serving
Directions
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
2. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish and scatter the sliced strawberries over the bread.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and strawberries, making sure all pieces are coated.
5. Allow the dish to sit for about 20 minutes so the bread can absorb the egg mixture, or you can cover and refrigerate overnight.
6. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
7. Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with maple syrup.
Variations & Tips
This recipe is quite adaptable to different tastes and seasons. For a fall-flavored bake, replace strawberries with sliced apples and add a dash of nutmeg to the egg mixture. Bananas and chocolate chips make for a decadent variant that's sure to be a hit with children. For a less sweet version suitable for a diabetic diet, reduce the sugar or use a sugar substitute, and focus on using berries with a lower glycemic index, such as blueberries.
